URBAN LIFE WELLNESS & COUNSELING CENTER, INC. (ULWCC) was founded in September 2003 by Thomas Johnson, Sr as The Urban Life Counseling Center. The ULWCC has served the city of East Orange, previously and now presently, its services at 220 So. Harrison Street. We are conveniently located near most public transportation including New Jersey Transit Trains. ULWCC is licensed by the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services Office of Licensing and is also a non-profit 501(C)(3) which is designed to help the consumers reduce the incidence and prevalence of substance abuse and other behavioral health problems among adults and adolescents through the provisions of intensive counseling, individual therapy, family counseling, as well as 12 step support and other community support programs. Clients are empowered to make decisions about their care with the expected out-come of an increased quality of life.
The Urban Life Wellness & Counseling Center is an organization that is funded mostly by fee for services vendors such as State Parole Board Mutual Agreement Program (MAP), Substance Abuse Initial (SAI), Essex County Drug Court, Essex County Probation Department. Urban Life also services clients through some majors insurance companies for third party billing, Medicaid, out of pocket expense with a sliding scale fee.
ULWCC has very significant logo of a puzzle with pieces falling off the sides which indicates a disruption in the family’s system and with the slogan that states “Putting Back The Pieces”. This is what ULWCC is all about, which means when people are offered the opportunities to take charge of their lives and adjust how they feel about themselves, it makes it much easier for them to go on and engage in the world as productive human, rather than a disjointed one.
The ULWCC was established on the promise that recovery is possible when an individual adopts a “wellness” approach in treating the disorders they are living with. Urban Life approaches treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders in a holistic manner. Treatment intervention provided at Urban Life focus on healing. The cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual domains that defines the individual and work assist the individual in achieving a healthy balance and integration of those domains. The Urban Life Wellness & Counseling Center is a therapeutic learning community where participants and staff engage in a process of mutual learning. Learning about the principles of wellness and recovery and the role that the disease of substance abuse plays in interfering with those processes.
